Glasses come in all shapes and sizes, and vintage glasses are no different. The French, Italian, German style of glasses are all different but all equally as beautiful, as are our own in the UK. Glasses have evolved over the centuries and if you go charity shop hunting, don’t overlook the small stumpy, clear odd shaped wine glasses, that lurk at the back of a shelf – these could be the ones worth good money. The old old glasses, from the 17th and 18th centuries, that have somehow survived to tell the tale. I have harped on about glassware more than once, I know , but I just love the myriad of styles and colours that you can buy for not a lot of money. My particular favourite is Victorian cranberry glass that when it catches the light .. especially on a Christmas table – well it just glows. I love it. Some glasses are so dainty, they feel like they’d smash with a sneeze but somehow they’ve survived for decades. Glasses got gaudier as we headed into the 20th century. Patterns, shapes, funky colours … 1950’s Bambi champagne glasses – oh the glamour darlink! I remember my aunt had glasses with big yellow spots on when I went to visit in the late 60’s .. I smile when I think about them. Oh the memories a glass can evoke. Modern plain colourless glass – is it going to illicit anything when you’re older, in the old memory bank?

I’m going over old ground I know, but it’s so important that we preserve our heritage and keep using all this lovely old stuff, that still serves a purpose, in our throwaway society. I’ll raise a glass to that, any day of the week! 🦚
